From 1st April 2013 Richmond Dental Care has been selected to be a pilot for the new NHS dental contract.
In 2012, a small group of practices providing NHS dental services in
England started to trial a different approach to looking after people’s
teeth as part of the new NHS dental pilot scheme. The scheme's aim is to
improve dental access and dental health for NHS patients.
The pilots test various ways of making sure the public understands
how to look after their mouths and teeth better, and also ensures
dentists are fairly paid for helping people do this.
Seventy dental practices across England are currently working closely
with the Department of Health to monitor the impact of the trial. You
can download a list of participating dental practices (PDF, 25Kb) from the Department of Health website. A further 20 to 25 practices are due to join the programme in April 2013.
Dentists working in pilot practices are taking a more pro-active,
preventive approach to achieving and maintaining patient oral health.
This includes producing a self-care plan for patients which indicates
the areas of oral health they do well, where there is a risk of dental
problems in the future, and what they can do at home to improve things
before their next visit. Updated at every visit, the self-care plan
allows patients and dentists to keep an eye on progress and, more
importantly, creates a record of actions agreed on by both sides. So
